Question 1

Does the number of reviews affect Google Maps rankings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Review count is one of the stronger local ranking signals. A profile with plenty of reviews reads as a business people are actually visiting and talking about, which makes it a better candidate for the Local Pack. It matters most on keyword-driven searches — someone typing “coffee near me” is far more likely to be shown the shop with three hundred genuine reviews than the one with four.

Question 2

How much does the average star rating matter for Maps rankings?

Accepted Answer

The average rating is one of the core factors. It is not the only one, but in a competitive category a business sitting below 4.0 usually gets pushed down. Google would rather send someone to a place other people rated well, because a bad click reflects on the search result as much as it does on the business.

Question 3

Which counts for more on Maps — how many reviews, or how good they are?

Accepted Answer

Google looks at both together. A perfect score off six reviews is not much to go on; hundreds of reviews averaging 3.2 says something else again. What you want is the combination — healthy volume, a strong average, and reviews with actual detail in them. That is what lifts a local ranking and keeps it lifted.

Question 4

Do the words inside reviews affect Maps rankings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Google reads the text of your reviews and uses it for matching. Search for “restaurant good for kids” and the places whose reviews mention children, high chairs and family meals get pushed forward. Reviews are not only social proof — they are a body of text the search engine mines for meaning.

Question 5

Does how often you receive reviews matter?

Accepted Answer

It does. Google favours businesses that look active, and a steady trickle of reviews is the clearest sign of it. A profile that has picked up a dozen reviews in the past month will generally sit above one whose most recent review is a year old, even if the older profile has the slightly better average. Consistency beats a one-off burst.

Question 6

How does Google weight one review against another?

Accepted Answer

It is not a flat average. Google takes into account when the review was left, how active the account behind it is, whether photos were attached, and whether the reviewer looks local. A review from an established Local Guide with photos carries far more weight than one from an account created that morning with no history behind it.

Question 7

Will a bad review drop my Maps ranking straight away?

Accepted Answer

One will not. A run of them might. If a business collects a cluster of one-star reviews in a short window, Google reads that as something having gone wrong recently, and may hold the listing back in results until it settles. Which is the argument for replying promptly and fixing whatever caused it, rather than waiting to see whether it blows over.

Question 8

Can I lift my ranking by getting bad reviews deleted?

Accepted Answer

In principle, yes — remove a review that was false or breached the rules and the average goes back up. But the only legitimate routes are reporting it to Google or the reviewer taking it down themselves. Manipulating reviews is against Google’s policies, and in Australia the ACCC treats fake or doctored reviews as misleading conduct. The workable answer is to bury one bad review under genuine good ones, not to delete your way out of it.

Question 9

Does replying to reviews help rankings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Google wants owners in the conversation, on the good reviews and the bad. Reply rate reads as a sign the profile is being looked after and that customers are being attended to, and that feeds back into how the listing performs. Even a short thank-you counts — it is engagement, and engagement is what the profile is measured on.

Question 10

Can I use AI to generate reviews and push my ranking up?

Accepted Answer

Do not. Fake and manipulated reviews are explicitly banned, and detection is better than most people assume. At best the reviews are hidden; at worst the profile is suspended. AI is fine for helping a real customer put their experience into words, but the experience has to be theirs and the review has to be posted from their own account.

Question 11

Do photos and videos in reviews affect rankings?

Accepted Answer

They help. Google treats a review with images attached as richer engagement, and it adds to the material the profile has to work with. There is a second benefit as well: photos of the room, the food or the shopfront give Google more evidence of what kind of business this actually is.

Question 12

Will duplicate reviews hurt my Maps ranking?

Accepted Answer

If Google sees the same wording appearing more than once — from one account or several — it treats those reviews as low quality. They may not count towards the score at all, and can be hidden outright. The review count looks healthy while doing nothing for you, which is why it pays to ask customers for their own words rather than handing them a template.

Question 13

Are new reviews worth more than old ones?

Accepted Answer

Recent reviews carry more weight. Maps leans towards businesses with activity in the last thirty to ninety days, on the reasoning that a review from last week describes the business as it is now, while one from 2021 describes a business that may have changed hands twice since. Older reviews still count — they just say less about today.

Question 14

Does it matter if the reviewer is a Local Guide?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Local Guides are treated as more credible reviewers and their reviews are weighted accordingly, particularly at the higher levels (Level 4 and above). Their reviews also tend to be indexed and shown sooner. One review from a serious Local Guide is worth several from accounts with no track record behind them.

Question 15

Does the tone of a review change how it is weighted?

Accepted Answer

It does. Google reads sentiment, not just stars. Warm, specific praise — “could not recommend them more”, “the service was faultless” — scores better than three lukewarm lines that could describe anywhere. And if strongly negative sentiment starts clustering, the profile gets treated as a risk regardless of what the average still says.

Question 16

How much do reviews matter for a brand-new listing?

Accepted Answer

Enormously. For a new Business Profile the first fifty reviews do most of the work: Google uses them to judge whether the business is credible and whether it deserves to appear in local results at all. The weeks just after a listing goes live are the time to be asking customers for reviews — not six months later, once the profile has already been buried.

Question 17

Do reviews carry the same weight in every industry?

Accepted Answer

Not quite. In hospitality, healthcare, fitness and education — anywhere the experience is personal and subjective — review content weighs heavily. For businesses that are essentially information or online services, Google leans more on website signals. Maps is built around places people walk into, so it favours the feedback of people who did.

Question 18

Does the reviewer’s location matter?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Reviews from people inside your actual trading area are trusted more. Google can see the location signals, and feedback from genuine local visitors is treated as the more reliable kind. A profile whose reviews come mostly from interstate or overseas accounts looks less locally relevant, and is weighted down for it.

Question 19

Does Google actually detect review manipulation?

Accepted Answer

It does, and it is good at it — repeated IP addresses, bought reviews, coordinated bursts. Businesses that buy or incentivise reviews are caught more often than they expect, and the penalty lands on the profile they have spent years building. In Australia there is a second risk on top of the Google one: paying for reviews can breach Australian Consumer Law. Ask properly, and build it slowly.

Question 20

Do reviews make a Maps ranking more stable over time?

Accepted Answer

They do. A business that keeps receiving good reviews, replies to them, and has photos coming in holds its position far better under pressure from competitors. Google Maps rewards accumulated content, and reviews are exactly that — an asset that compounds quietly, month after month, and is very hard for a newcomer to buy their way past.
