ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads: An Honest Comparison for Australian Businesses
Google Ads buys the moment someone types a query. ChatGPT ads buy a place beside a conversation someone is already having. Google is mature, large, measurable and expensive. ChatGPT is new, small, uncrowded and simple. For most Australian small businesses the sensible move right now is to hold the Google position and put a small share of budget into ChatGPT early. The ChatGPT side of this comparison comes from an account we built and run ourselves.

Side by side
| Item | Google Ads | ChatGPT ads |
|---|---|---|
| What the user is doing | Typing a few words | Asking in full sentences, following up, comparing |
| Matching | Keywords and match types | A context hint per ad group |
| Formats | Search, Maps, Shopping, Display, YouTube, call ads | One sponsored card: 50-character headline, 100-character body, image, link |
| Location | Country, city, radius, postcode | Country, state, postcode. No city option for Sydney or Melbourne, no radius |
| Billing | Mostly per click, with impression and conversion bidding | Per click or per impression, fixed bid or system-optimised |
| Budget | Daily | Daily, or a lifetime cap on the campaign |
| Data before launch | Keyword Planner volumes and bid estimates | None |
| Conversion tracking | Google tag, GA4, offline imports | OpenAI pixel and a server-side Conversions API |
| Competition | Crowded in most trades | Very light, and close to none in Chinese |
| Maturity | Over twenty years, stable rules | Beta, still changing |
Where Google Ads is strong
Clear intent. Someone who searches “tax accountant Chatswood” has told you what they want. Enquiries from queries like that have been the best in paid media for years.
Volume you can forecast. Before spending anything you can look up how many people search a term in your area and roughly what a click costs. When an owner asks what $2,000 will buy, Google’s data supports a realistic range.
A complete toolkit. Call ads, Maps placement, remarketing, negative keywords, ad scheduling. Everything a local business needs exists already.
Plenty of people can run it. Changing agency does not mean starting over.
Where Google Ads hurts
Cost. In Sydney and Melbourne, clicks for lawyers, mortgage brokers, removalists, locksmiths and cosmetic clinics commonly run to tens of dollars. A small budget is gone after a handful of clicks a day and never gathers enough data to improve.
Thin volume in Chinese. Chinese-language queries for local services are limited, and the same group of businesses has bid on them for years.
Users are moving some questions to AI. For anything that needs explaining or comparing, more people ask ChatGPT first and search afterwards, or not at all. Google ads do not reach that moment.
Automated suggestions. The interface pushes auto-applied recommendations and broader matching every week. Accounts that accept everything tend to pay for queries that have little to do with the business.
Where ChatGPT ads are strong

Few competitors. When we built our account we saw almost no ads for comparable services, and none in Chinese. Early advertisers face little bid pressure.
Timing. Questions in ChatGPT sound like “roughly what does a small business website cost in Sydney, and should I use a local agency or an offshore team?” The person is mid-decision, and the card sits under that answer.
Fast to build. Three levels and one format. We built four campaigns and eleven ads in a day, and most were approved in around ten minutes.
Postcode targeting. A shopfront can advertise only to the postcodes around it.
A hard ceiling on spend. A lifetime cap on the campaign stops delivery when it is reached, which suits a test.
Where ChatGPT ads fall short
No data before launch. No search volumes and no benchmark prices. Nobody can tell you in advance how many clicks a budget will buy.
Small reach. Ads do not appear in every conversation, and the reachable audience is far smaller than Google’s. It will not carry a business alone.
One format. No call ads, no map placement, no full remarketing suite.
Sensitive review, thin explanations. A service category that advertises freely on Google was labelled “Scams and fraud: low-confidence scam” here. That sentence was the whole explanation, so you work out the fix by trial.
Beta. Features, policies and reports can change. Advice written today may need rewriting in three months.
The answer is not for sale. The ad is a card under the response. Which businesses ChatGPT names inside the response depends on content and entity signals, which is AEO.

How to split the budget
| Your situation | Suggested split |
|---|---|
| Google Ads already produces steady enquiries | Leave Google alone. Put 10 to 20 percent into ChatGPT and run it for four full weeks before judging. |
| Google clicks have become too expensive | Narrow Google to the few terms that make money. Test ChatGPT with what you save and invest in content for organic traffic. |
| Most customers are Chinese-speaking | Test Chinese ChatGPT ads first. Once approved, you hold a slot almost nobody else is bidding on. |
| You have never advertised | Fix the website and Google Business Profile. Spend the first month on Google Search because its data teaches you faster, then add ChatGPT. |
| The site breaks on mobile or has no enquiry form | Advertise on neither yet. Fix the site first. |
Both platforms depend on the same landing page
Wherever the click comes from, the visitor lands on the same page. If it takes five seconds to load, breaks on a phone or hides the phone number, a Google click and a ChatGPT click are wasted equally.
That is why we start every ChatGPT ads engagement with a free website audit covering load time, mobile layout, first-screen contact options, pixel readiness and anything likely to stall ad review. The full process is in our guide to ChatGPT advertising in Sydney.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between ChatGPT ads and Google Ads?
Google Ads matches on keywords: someone types a query and you bid on it. ChatGPT ads have no keywords. You write a context hint describing the conversations you want to appear beside and the system does the matching. One buys a search, the other buys a place in a conversation.
Are ChatGPT ads cheaper than Google Ads?
It is too early to say. There are few advertisers, so bid pressure is low, but there are no published industry benchmarks and volume is small. Google prices are well known, and in Sydney a click in a competitive trade commonly costs tens of dollars. The number that matters is cost per enquiry, and you only learn that by running both.
I have one budget. Which platform gets it?
If Google Ads already brings steady enquiries, keep it and move ten to twenty percent into a ChatGPT test. If you have never advertised, fix the website and Google Business Profile first, then start with Google Search because it gives you search volume data to learn from.
Can ChatGPT ads replace Google Ads?
Not in the near term. Google has Search, Maps, Shopping, YouTube, remarketing and call ads. ChatGPT has one card format. They reach the same customer at different moments.
Can I track conversions from both at once?
Yes. Google uses the Google tag and GA4, OpenAI uses its own pixel, and they do not interfere. Put distinct UTM tags on each platform’s landing URLs so every enquiry can be traced to its source.
Is ChatGPT ad review stricter than Google’s?
In our experience it is more sensitive. Review management is a category advertised openly on Google Search, yet our ads for it were rejected twice in ChatGPT as a possible scam. A headline describing the outcome instead of the method was approved.
Do ChatGPT ads get my business mentioned in the answer?
No. The ad is a labelled card under the answer. Which businesses ChatGPT names in the answer itself depends on your content and entity signals, which is AEO work.
