AI Website vs Wix and Squarespace: Where Templates Fall Short
Wix and Squarespace are good at one thing: getting a decent-looking site online quickly, by you, for a monthly fee. Where they fall short is everything that happens after launch — being found in local search, being quoted by AI assistants, and changing shape as the business changes. An AI-built custom site costs more up front and less over time, and it is yours.
This is not a hit piece. Plenty of Sydney businesses run perfectly well on a builder. The point is to know which situation you are in before you spend a weekend dragging blocks around.
What you are actually comparing
People frame this as “cheap builder versus expensive agency”, which is the wrong axis. The real difference is who does the thinking.
| Wix / Squarespace | AI-built custom site | |
|---|---|---|
| Who builds it | You, from a template | Us, with AI doing the heavy lifting |
| Upfront cost | Low | $1,588–$3,588 |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly plan, for as long as the site exists | Hosting, and changes if you want them |
| Structure | Whatever the template allows | Built around your services and suburbs |
| Moving it later | Hard — content and design stay on their platform | You own the files and can move hosts |
| Time from you | Days to weeks of your own evenings | A briefing call and a content review |
If the second column’s upfront figure makes you wince, the builder is probably the right call for now. That is a legitimate answer.
Where templates start to hurt
The problems rarely show up on launch day. They show up six months later when the site has been live and nothing much has happened.
- One page trying to do five jobs. Templates push you toward a single services page. Search engines and AI assistants reward one clear page per service, and one per area you actually work in. You can build that on a builder, but the template will not suggest it and most people do not.
- Headings chosen for looks. Builders let you pick a heading size by how it looks, so the page structure underneath ends up random — three top-level headings, or none. It looks fine to a person and reads badly to a machine.
- Thin local detail. Suburbs served, how to find you, what parking is like, whether you speak Mandarin or Cantonese. These are the details that win local searches, and templates have no obvious place for them.
- The rent never stops. The monthly plan is small, but it runs for the life of the site. Over four or five years it often adds up to more than a custom build would have cost.
- Leaving is painful. When you outgrow the builder, the design does not come with you and the content has to be copied out by hand.
None of these are fatal. They are just the places where a do-it-yourself site quietly stops earning.
What “AI-built” actually means here
It does not mean a chatbot writes your website and nobody checks it. It means the slow, repetitive parts — layout, first drafts, technical setup — are done by machine in hours instead of weeks, and a person spends the saved time on the parts that matter: what you sell, who searches for it, and whether every page answers a real question. We covered how that plays out in our piece on launching in seven days.
The result is a site you own outright, structured around your business rather than a template’s idea of a business, with the search basics done properly from the start.
How to decide
Stay on Wix or Squarespace if the site is mainly a contact card, you enjoy building it yourself, and you do not rely on search for new customers. Move to a custom build if most of your customers find you on Google or ask an AI assistant for recommendations, if you serve several suburbs or offer several distinct services, or if you are already paying a builder plan plus someone to maintain it.
If you are already on a builder and unsure, our guide to redesigning versus rebuilding has four quick tests that apply just as well to a Wix site.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wix or Squarespace bad for SEO?
No. Both can rank, and both handle the technical basics reasonably well. The difference is that the structure — how many pages you have, what each one targets, how headings are set up — is left to you. Most owners build a handful of pages that look good but do not each answer a specific search, and that is what holds them back.
Can I move my Wix site to a custom website later?
Yes, but the design does not transfer and content has to be moved across manually. What matters most is keeping your existing page addresses working: every old URL should redirect to its new equivalent so you keep whatever search rankings the Wix site had earned.
Is an AI-built website just a template with extra steps?
It should not be. The AI speeds up the layout, first drafts and setup, but the page structure should be planned around your actual services, suburbs and customer questions, and a person should review every page before launch. If nobody is doing that planning and review, you are paying for a template.
