Sydney AI Websites: They Ask an AI Before They Walk In
Somebody needs what you sell. They open ChatGPT and type “who does this properly in Sydney”. Three names come back with a line of detail each. That exchange is the first conversation anyone has about your business now, and you are not in the room for it. A Sydney AI website is, in practical terms, the thing that speaks on your behalf while it happens.
The first conversation happens without you
It used to be that a customer found a list and did their own filtering. Now something filters first and hands over two or three names. The shortlist arrives already made.
If nothing about your business is written down in a form a machine can use, you are not rejected at that stage — you are simply not part of it. The customer does not see an absence. They see three options and pick one. That is the part business owners find hardest to believe, because from the inside nothing looks wrong: the site is up, the phone works, the reviews are good.
The same mechanism is what keeps working after hours, which we wrote about in letting ChatGPT work the night shift — the questions do not stop when you close.
What gets your name handed over
Nobody outside those companies can tell you exactly how a name is chosen, and the honest position is that it changes. What holds steady is what the machine has to work with:
- Answers, not claims. “We charge $180 for a standard service and it takes about two hours” can be quoted. “Unmatched quality and service” cannot be quoted by anything that cares about being right.
- Facts stated once, stated the same way everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours, area served — in structured data, matching your Google Business Profile exactly.
- Something to stand behind. A named owner, a licence number, reviews from people who read as local, work you can point at.
That last group is the one worth understanding properly, and it has its own article: the trust signals that decide whether an AI will name you.
Ads are rent. This is closer to ownership
Most Sydney businesses already know what paid search costs, and they know the shape of it: the enquiries arrive while the card is being charged and stop within days of it not being. Next year the same click costs a bit more, because the auction only goes one way.
A page that answers a real question behaves differently. It gets written once, it gets quoted whenever somebody asks that question, and there is no monthly invoice attached to whether it keeps doing that. It is slower to start and it does not switch off. None of which makes advertising wrong — if you need bookings this month, pay for them. It does mean that spending entirely on rent and nothing on the thing you keep is a strange way to run a business.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
There is no switch, and anyone selling you one is guessing. What is observable is that the businesses that get named have something checkable behind them: a real address, a named person, prices, and answers written plainly enough to be quoted in a sentence. The businesses that get skipped usually have a site made of adjectives. Start there rather than with the tool.
Can an AI get my details wrong?
Yes, and it happens most often when the facts are scattered. A phone number in an image, an old address on a directory listing, opening hours that disagree between your site and your Google Business Profile — something has to be picked, and the guess can be wrong. Stating the facts once in structured data and keeping every listing consistent is most of the fix.
How is this different from running ads?
Ads are rent. You pay, the enquiries arrive, you stop paying and they stop the same week, and next year the same click costs more. Being the source an AI quotes behaves more like something you own: the page is written once, it gets cited repeatedly, and nobody turns it off at the end of the month. Ads are still the right tool when you need volume next Tuesday. They are a poor substitute for being findable.
What is AEO?
Work that gets ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers to cite you directly. It runs on question-and-answer content, structured data and trust signals (E-E-A-T).
What is structured data?
A machine-readable way of stating who you are, what you do, where you are and how you are regarded — so Google’s rich results and AI tools describe you accurately instead of guessing.
Why can’t customers find us?
Usually missing local terms, thin content, or technical problems underneath. Fix those three and the site comes back into view.
You’re in Melbourne — can you work with Sydney businesses?
Yes. Melmel works across Sydney and the rest of Australia, remotely and in both English and Chinese. Phone 0473 034 777 · email kan@melmel.com.au.
What does this cost?
It depends on whether content, SEO and AEO are inside the quote. Melmel does design and build with AEO and AI SEO from $1,000 a month, with no lock-in contract, and the $199 whole-site AI audit comes off your first month.
How long before it shows?
The technical and structural changes are crawled as soon as they are live. SEO and AI citations generally start within weeks, and evergreen content compounds month on month.
