How to Check Whether AI Is Citing Your Brand
You have tidied the content, added structured data and worked on your Google reviews — so is any of it landing? Unlike search, where you can look up a ranking, AI answers come with no public leaderboard. That does not make generative engine optimisation (GEO) unmeasurable. Here is a method Australian businesses can run every month to see whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are naming them.
Step one: probe the way a customer would
The most direct test is to ask the AI what a prospect would ask, which is never your business name. Build a fixed set of questions around location, industry and need, and reuse exactly those questions every month — the comparison is the whole point.
- Write 8 to 12 questions real customers ask, in their words. “Who are the good accountants in Sydney CBD?” “Recommend a well-reviewed dentist near Chatswood.”
- Run each one through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Record whether your name appears, the reason given for the recommendation, and which source links the answer cites.
- Log out, or use a temporary chat or private window. Your own history will otherwise hand you a flattering answer nobody else is getting.
- Divide mentions by total questions asked. That ratio is your citation rate, and it is the number you compare month to month.
Step two: turn the snapshot into a trend
One round of testing is a photograph. What you want is the trend, which means running the same list on the same date each month and writing the results down somewhere they survive.
| What you track | What you look at | How |
|---|---|---|
| AI citation rate | Share of your fixed questions that mention you | Manual probing, logged in a spreadsheet |
| Sources cited | Whether AI is quoting your site, your reviews or a directory | The source links under each answer |
| AI referral traffic | Sessions arriving from openai, perplexity, gemini | GA4 → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition |
| Branded search | Whether searches for your name rise after mentions | Google Search Console |
The GA4 line is the one most people never look at, and it is the only hard evidence in the table. Filter traffic acquisition for sessions whose source contains openai, perplexity or gemini and you are looking at people an AI answer sent to your door.
Step three: let the results change what you do next
Measurement is only worth the hour it takes if it changes something. A category of question where you never appear means there is no content or markup on your site worth quoting on that subject — so write it. An answer that cites a stale directory listing means your business details need fixing at the source, not on your own site. Check, fix the gap, check again next month. That loop is what makes GEO get sharper instead of staying a guess.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small business measure GEO without paid tools?
Yes. A fixed list of questions, a monthly retest, and the traffic acquisition report in GA4 will tell you most of what you need. One spreadsheet is a workable starting point. Dedicated AI visibility platforms are worth considering once you are tracking several locations or a large question set, not before.
How often should I run the check?
Monthly, on roughly the same date, using exactly the same questions. Models and their indexes update on their own schedule, so daily testing mostly measures noise. Monthly is frequent enough to show a trend and light enough that you keep doing it.
Why not just ask the AI about my business by name?
Because no customer does that before they have heard of you. Asking “what do you know about [business]” tells you what the model has stored; it does not tell you whether you get recommended. Ask the question a prospect would ask, then see whether your name appears unprompted.
Why do I need to be logged out or in a temporary chat?
Chat history and saved memory shape the answers you get. If the model already knows you run the business, it will bring you up. Use a logged-out session, a temporary chat or a private window so you are seeing what a stranger sees.
What is a reasonable citation rate to aim for?
There is no universal benchmark, which is why the useful number is your own from last month. Mentioned in 2 of 10 questions and then 4 of 10 is real progress. Chasing an absolute figure across different industries and question sets tells you nothing.
How do I see AI referral traffic in GA4?
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and filter the session source for openai, perplexity, gemini or copilot. Those sessions are people who read an AI answer about you and came through to the site. It is the hardest evidence available in this whole exercise.
What if the AI mentions me but cites outdated information?
Treat it as a sourcing problem, not a content problem. Find the page it is pulling from, which is usually a directory listing or an old profile, and correct the details there. Your business name, address and phone need to match across Google Business Profile, your website and every directory that carries you.
What should I do about questions where I never appear?
Read them as a content gap. If nothing on your site answers that question with any depth, there is nothing to quote. Write the page, give it answer-first structure and an FAQ, add the relevant schema, and retest the same question next month.
Do different AI tools give different answers to the same question?
Frequently. Perplexity leans on live search and shows its sources, ChatGPT mixes retrieval with what the model already holds, Gemini draws heavily on Google’s own data. Test across all of them rather than taking one as the verdict.
How long before this starts moving?
Expect four to twelve weeks between changing something and seeing it in the answers. Reviews accumulate, pages get recrawled, models refresh. The point of a monthly log is that you can see slow movement at all instead of guessing.
